NILD/DISCOVERY PROGRAM: EDUCATIONAL THERAPY
PURPOSE
· To help students to overcome academic difficulties and fulfill their potential.
· To treat underlying causes of learning difficulties rather than treating the symptoms.
· To develop tools for independent learning in the classroom and in life.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR NILD?
A student who experiences obvious frustration in areas of academic performance or has difficulties in:
· Reading
· Retaining or recalling information
· Reasoning skills/Abstract thinking
· Listening skills
· Spelling
· Math skills
· Ability to express thoughts verbally or in writing
THE NILD PHILOSOPHY
· Non-Tutorial/ Educational therapy focuses on a student's deficit areas and not on classroom content. Sessions include a variety of techniques designed specifically to stimulate a student's problem areas. The goal is to build a strong and solid foundation in perceptual and cognitive functioning.
· Educational therapy is an intensive and long term process. Students meet for 2-3 sessions/week. Most students require a minimum of three years to produce measurable gains in academic/classroom work.
· Parental involvement and student cooperation are keys to the success of the program.
