Community and Service

The emphasis of Community and Service is on developing awareness and a sense of responsibility towards the community. At AISJ we encourage students to look beyond the classroom and become caring and responsible citizens who can participate in and respond to the needs of the community.

                             School-wide Service Day; October 2010

In October our students chose 1 of 4 Community & Service placements to do their volunteer work:

  • Augusta Victoria Hospital: Students picked olives which were later pressed for olive oil. The olive oil was donated or sold to help needy families.
  • Local Soup Kitchen: Students prepared lunch for need people.
  • Community Garden: Students planted herbs to be used for the "Souper Hero" planned in February 2011.
  • Leket: Students travelled to Rehovot and harvested onions from an onion field. Students harvested over 500 kilos of onions. The onions were donated to needy families.

                                                  Other Projects

"Souper" Hero Day: February 2011 - Based on this year's school theme "Heroes," students created ceramic soup bowls representing heroes. Admission to the event included soup served in the hand-crafted bowls, as well as salad and dessert. The project integrated students shopping at the local vegetable market to purchase food to make 4 different types of soup, including onion soup! Students then broke into groups to make the soup and salad. The entire MYP student body played an important role in this event. Students manned tables, performed music, created and sold silk-screened "souper" Hero aprons and were responsible for setup and clean up. All parents were invited to this special lunchtime event. Over 3,000 shekels were raised. The money was donated to soup kitchens in both East and West Jerusalem.

Project Japan: In response to the devastating criss in Japan, our student body rallied and quickly implemented a fundraiser. This project was spearheaded by Dean Weinzweig. This project included a silent auction where students and staff donated their time for a specific service. In addition, a Japanese meal made by students was sold at lunch time. This project raised over 2,500 NIS to be donated to a special fund for the Japan Disaster Relief.
